San Juan Hut-to-Hut Bike Trip | Colorado to Utah

We did an amazing 7-day mountain bike ride in the San Juan Mountain Range in the summer of 2007. On day 5, I told Annie she had a flat, she stopped, I pulled a ring out of her seat bag, and I we got engaged! That’s really the highlight, but read on if you must…

The route goes from Telluride, CO to Moab, UT. All we had to bring were clothes and spare parts/tools. The huts had sleeping bags, food, and water (all owned and maintained by the San Juan Huts System company). Compared to our typical bike trip, it was posh.

Check out this short movie of our ride to get a sense of the amazing scenery.

We asked a bunch of our friends to join us and the only people crazy enough to commit to it were:

  • Doug (wife wanted him out of the house)
  • Heidi (came all the way from Africa)
  • Chris and Sandra (both of them didn’t really know what they were getting into)

We quickly settled into a daily routine. It consisted of heading out after breakfast and arriving to the next hut by early afternoon. After a quick lunch and often a nap, we’d go for a stroll before dinner. The riding was mostly fire roads, but there were opportunities to  veer onto alternative routes that were single-track.

Logistics

In terms of logistics, we all flew into Green River, CO and met at the airport. We had reserved a large van to fit us and our boxed-up bicycles, but they ended up putting us into two rental cars. We dropped the rental cars off at the Telluride airport and rode our bikes back to town – very easy.

I assembled my bike and Annie’s. Chris and Sandra paid a local shop to assemble theirs. Doug and Heidi rented bikes from a local shop. They also arranged for a guy who ran a shuttle service to return them to Telluride after we arrived in Moab. The rest of us had a bike shop in Moab box and ship our bikes back to us. Not the cheapest option, but the most convenient.

Contact San Juan Huts to reserve the huts. To get the start date that you want, be sure to make your reservations months in advance.
