Surfs up at Kuta Beach | Bali

So how could we not go surfing while we were in Bali? Since both of us were relative neophytes to boards and waves, we decided to play it safe and go out with an instructor from Odyssey Surf and some big spongy beginner boards.

It turned out to be an awesome surf session. Well, at least it seemed awesome to us beginners. Nice, small, gentle waves and forgiving sandy bottom. Our instructor was great. He would give us a little helping shove on some waves and move us to different locations as the conditions changed. We actually caught a lot of waves.

I was so surprised each time that I was actually catching a wave that my jaw would drop wide open. Soon after, I’d be spitting out a mouth full of sea water from all of the spray. Got to remember to keep my mouth shut…

Our instructor got an interesting start to his surfing career. His father was a fishing man who started taking surfers out to offshore breaks. An Australia, who didn’t have enough money for the bill, ended up giving him his surfboard to pay his debt. And daddy passed it on to his kiddo. Ahhh…

I don’t own a surfboard, so I made sure I had enough for the bill.
